CINCINNATI, 30 July 2003 — Kelly Stinnett hit a basesloaded single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Cincinnati a 6-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League on Monday, hours after the Reds fired their general manager and manager.
GM Jim Bowden and manager Bob Boone were fired with the Reds languishing in fifth place in the NL Central after winning only seven of their previous 23 games.
The Reds took a 4-1 lead over the Phillies after one inning but had to rally to tie the game on Sean Casey’s eighth-inning homer.
Reliever Scott Williamson (5-3) tossed a scoreless 10th for the victory.
Jose Guillen also homered for the Reds, who were managed for the day by third base coach Ray Knight. The Reds also fired third base coach Tim Foli and batting coach Tom Robson before the game.
Dave Miley, manager of Triple-A Louisville, will take over the team for the rest of the season. The Reds said a general manager would be hired after the World Series and he would appoint a new manager.
Adam Dunn and Ruben Mateo both had three hits and drove in a run for the Reds while D’Angelo Jimenez and Ray Olmedo both added two hits.
Terry Adams (1-4) allowed one run on two hits with two walks without getting an out in the 10th to take the loss. Marlon Byrd and Jimmy Rollins both had two hits and drove in two runs for the Reds.
Pirates 3 Cardinals 0
In St. Louis, Jeff Suppan pitched his third complete game and second shutout of the season as the Pittsburgh Pirates blanked the Cardinals 3-0.
Suppan (10-7) allowed seven hits while striking out five and walking one to tie his career high for wins in a season. Reggie Sanders cracked a two-run homer for the Pirates while Matt Stairs had two hits and an RBI and Randall Simon added three hits. Brett Tomko (6-7) gave up three runs on eight hits over seven innings for the loss, striking out four and walking two. Bo Hart had two of the seven hits for St. Louis.
Marlins 3 Diamondbacks 2
In Miami, Miguel Cabrera homered and had three RBI as the Florida Marlins edged the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2.
Mark Redman (9-4) allowed two runs on six hits over 7 1/3 innings with five strikeouts and two walks. Braden Looper picked up the last three outs for his 19th save of the season. Miguel Batista (7-6) gave up three runs on seven hits with 11 strikeouts and one walk to take the loss. Matt Kata had four hits for the D-Backs while Shea Hillenbrand homered.
Brewers 4 Mets 2
In New York, Scott Podsednik struck a two-run single in the top of the ninth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Mets 4-2. Richie Sexson homered and drove in two runs for the Brewers. Leo Estrella (3-2) went 1 2/3 innings for the win while Danny Kolb tossed a scoreless ninth for his third save of the season.
David Weathers (1-5) allowed two runs on one hit in one inning to take the loss.
Braves 10 Expos 8
In Montreal, Marcus Giles thumped two homers, including a grand slam, and drove in six runs with four hits to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 10-8 victory over the Expos. Javy Lopez also homered for the Braves while Rafael Furcal had three hits and drove in three runs. Mike Hampton (7-5) allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits over six innings. Vladimir Guerrero homered twice, had three hits and drove in three runs for Montreal. Orlando Cabrera had two hits and drove in two runs. Javier Vazquez (8- 7) gave up eight runs, four earned, on 12 hits over 5 2/3 innings while John Smoltz survived a shaky ninth for his 38th save of the season.
Palmeiro Notches 514th Homer in Rangers Romp
In Seattle, Rafael Palmeiro hit a grand slam homer and a three-run homer for a career-high seven RBI to lead the Texas Rangers to a 10-1 romp over the Seattle Mariners in the American League on Monday.
Palmeiro struck his three-run homer in the first inning off starter Ryan Franklin before belting the grand slam off Arthur Rhodes in the seventh.
The Rangers slugger now has 514 career home runs, moving up to 15th place on the all-time list, two ahead of Ernie Banks. Hank Blalock also homered for the Rangers and had four hits and two RBI while also scoring three runs. Alex Rodriguez added two hits and drove in a run for Texas.
Joaquin Benoit (6-5) tossed seven shutout innings, allowing two hits while striking out seven and walking none. Franklin (7-9) gave up six runs, five earned, on eight hits over six innings. He struck out three and walked none. Pat Borders drove in the lone run for Seattle.
Angels 2 Athletics 1
In Anaheim, Tim Salmon and Garret Anderson singled home runs in the eighth inning to help the Angels edge the Oakland Athletics 2-1. Jarrod Washburn pitched seven shutout innings, allowing four hits while striking out seven and walking one. Brendan Donnelly (1-1) picked up the win with one shutout inning while Troy Percival pitched the ninth for his 23rd save of the season. Barry Zito also tossed seven shutout innings, surrendering four hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Ricardo Rincon (6-4) gave up two runs on one hit over 2/3 innings. Erubiel Durazo homered off Percival in the ninth for Oakland’s lone run.
