MIAMI, 1 August 2003 — Dontrelle Willis eclipsed Randy Johnson in a showdown between two of the top left-handers in baseball to help the streaking Florida Marlins defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1 in the National League on Wednesday.

Twenty-one-year-old Willis (10-2) went seven strong innings, allowing one run on four hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Nate Bump tossed a scoreless inning of relief and Braden Looper gave up one hit in the ninth to pick up his 21st save of the season and complete the five-hitter.

Johnson (1-4) surrendered two unearned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks to take the loss.

The 39-year-old made only his third start since missing 2 1/2 months after arthroscopic knee surgery.

The Marlins notched their sixth straight victory in front of a crowd of 37,735, the largest in Miami since 2001. The Diamondbacks have lost nine in a row on the road, a franchise record.

Chicago in Valentin Day Massacre

Jose Valentin clubbed three home runs in his first three at-bats to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 15-4 rout of the Kansas City Royals in the American League on Wednesday.

Valentin drove in five runs, had three hits and scored three times while Paul Konerko collected a grand slam for Chicago and drove in six runs.

The White Sox have won six games in a row and are 11-2 since they hosted the All-Star Game.

Chicago is now within two games of first place in the AL Central.
