NEW YORK, 4 August 2003 — Jason Giambi belted a three-run homer and Bernie Williams had four hits and drove in two runs to inspire the New York Yankees to a 10-7 win over the Oakland Athletics in the American League on Saturday.

Hideki Matsui, John Flaherty and Williams also homered as the Yankees charged into an 8-4 lead after three innings. Derek Jeter had two hits and drove in a run while Todd Zeile also had two hits in New York’s 12-hit assault, most of which came against Oakland starter Barry Zito.

Jeff Weaver (6-8) allowed six runs, four earned, on 10 hits over 6 1/3 innings for the win. Mariano Rivera picked up the last three outs for his 21st save of the season after coming into the game in the ninth with two on and none out.

Royals 10 Devil Rays 8

In Kansas City, Carlos Beltran homered and drove in two runs as the Royals defeated the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 10-8 after blowing a 7-2 lead. Brent Mayne had three hits and drove in the winning run for the Royals with an eighth-inning single.

Tigers 9 Twins 2

In Minneapolis, Craig Monroe thumped a three-run homer as the Detroit Tigers overwhelmed the Minnesota Twins 9-2. Warren Morris drove in three runs with two hits and Ramon Santiago had two hits and two RBI for Detroit.

Orioles 11 Red Sox 2

In Baltimore, Jay Gibbons went 4-for-4 with an RBI as the Orioles scored seven runs in the sixth inning to pound the Boston Red Sox 11-2. Luis Matos homered and Jeff Conine had three hits and scored three runs for Baltimore.

Rangers 9 Indians 7

In Arlington, Texas, Rafael Palmeiro homered and drove in the game-winning run with a double to lead the Rangers past the Cleveland Indians 9-7. Alex Rodriguez and Laynce Nix also homered for Texas.

Blue Jays 6 Angels 1

In Anaheim, rookie Corey Thurman tossed six shutout innings as the Toronto Blue Jays outplayed the Angels 6-1. Thurman (1-0) allowed four hits with five strikeouts and two walks for the win.

Mariners 10 White Sox 0

In Seattle, John Olerud cracked two homers, a grand slam and a three-run homer, to spark the Mariners to a 10-0 thrashing of the Chicago White Sox. Olerud produced his three-run shot in the sixth and his grand slam an inning later to help knock the White Sox out of first place in the AL Central.

In-Form Braves Pile on Agony for Dodgers

In Atlanta, Chipper Jones drove in three runs and Mike Hampton picked up his fifth straight win to earn the Atlanta Braves a 6-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League on Saturday. The Braves (73-37) have the best record in the major leagues after claiming their third successive win.

In Cincinnati, Barry Larkin’s bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning yielded the winning run as the Reds beat the San Francisco Giants 5-4. D’Angelo Jimenez homered for the Reds while Sean Casey drove in two runs.

Cardinals 10 Mets 9

In New York, rookie Bo Hart belted a grand slam homer to help the St Louis Cardinals edge the Mets 10-9.

Albert Pujols and JD Drew also homered for the Cards while Mike Matheny drove in four runs. Brett Tomko (7-7) allowed three runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings while Esteban Yan had the last out for his first save of the season.

Diamondbacks 4 Cubs 3

In Chicago, Raul Mondesi drove in the winning run with a ninth-inning double as the Arizona Diamondbacks overcame the Cubs 4-3. Alex Cintron’s homer earlier in the ninth tied the game while Luis Gonzalez and Junior Spivey also homered for Arizona, which ended a team record 10-game road losing streak.

Padres 6 Phillies 4 (Game One)

In Philadelphia, Jake Peavy tossed seven shutout innings as the San Diego Padres downed the Phillies 6-4 in the first game of a doubleheader. Peavy (9-8) allowed two hits with five strikeouts and four walks while Phil Nevin homered and drove in four runs.

In game two, Bobby Abreu and Placido Polanco both drove in three runs as the Phillies took revenge by brushing aside the Padres 10-4.

In Montreal, Javier Vazquez pitched a complete-game eight-hitter to lead the Expos past the Milwaukee Brewers 7-1.

In Miami, Mike Lowell smashed a three-run homer to guide the Florida Marlins to a 5-2 win over the Houston Astros. Alex Gonzalez also homered for Florida while Ivan Rodriguez had three hits and drove in the other run.
