THESSALONIKI, Greece, 5 August 2003 — American Joshua Johnson won the 100 and 200 meters at the IAAF Grand Prix II meet on Sunday.

Johnson used a late burst to finish the 100 in 10.15 seconds and hold off Nigerian Uchenna Emedolu, who was second in 10.17. “I started slow, but had to pick up my speed at the end,” Johnson said.

Johnson won the 200 in 20.21 as Americans took the top three spots. Ramon Clay was second in 20.48 and Shawn Crawford was third in 20.58.

American Demetria Washington won the women’s 400 in 51.46, while countrywoman Monique Hennagan was second and Ronetta Smith of Jamaica was third.

In other events, Jamaica’s Kemel Thompson won the 400 hurdles in 48.50 and Ukraine’s Anzhela Kravchenko won the women’s 100 in 11.31.

Montgomery, Greene in Possible Golden League Showdown

In Berlin, world record holder Tim Montgomery will be competing at Sunday’s ISTAF Golden League meet and possibly face world champion Maurice Greene in the 100 meters, organizers said yesterday.

Montgomery, who last year raised Greene’s world record by one hundredth of a second to 9.78 seconds, has already announced his intention to run in the individual race.

Montgomery was set to return from a one-month break tomorrow in Stockholm. He took one month off after his partner Marion Jones gave birth to their son Tim Jr.

Greene, who will be seeking an unprecedented fourth straight 100m world title Aug. 23-31 in Paris, has so far not entered the race, but Schwarthoff said that “he can decide until the last moment whether he wants to run in the race”.

Schwarthoff also said that the ISTAF meet will feature the only two athletes remaining in the Golden League jackpot race for $1 million — women’s 100m sprinter Chandra Sturrup of the Bahamas and Mozambique 800m star Maria Mutola. Sturrup and Mutola won their event at the first Golden League stops of Oslo, Paris and Rome will get the jackpot if they also win in Berlin, Zurich (Aug. 15) and Brussels Sept. 5). Like last year, the ISTAF will take place in Berlin’s Jahn stadium because its original venue, the Olympic Stadium, is undergoing renovation.
