JEDDAH, 8 August 2003 — Dr. Motaz El-Fadil of Bahlas Medical Center and Jimmy De Leon of Alma Glass engaged in a positional battle in the second set of the best of two games of the semifinal match of Series 9 Alfaf Hotel chess tournament last Friday.
El Fadil the round robin third placer and the No. 3 seed of the Stepladder Knockout Final proved just a little tougher in the crunch and need only a draw to be in the final. De Leon the No. 5 seed arrived an hour late at the venue and lost his first game by default against El-Fadil.
The final score was 1.05 - 0.05, in favor of El-Fadil who will meet the No. 1 seed of the Stepladder Knockout Final Benjie Roxas for the championship.
The championship match between Roxas and El-Fadil will comprise of two games of Active Chess timing of 30 minutes each player and in the case of a 1-1 result, the match will be settled by one Semi-Active chess with 15 minutes each on the clock. White must win and a draw is a victory for black.
CCC and Active Chess rules bound this event. Meanwhile, the Community Chess Club has declared the next Series Ten as open.
Those interested may register at Al-Faf Hotel during Friday from 3 p.m. to 9p.m. The CCC organizer is inviting interested parties and companies who wanted to sponsor the Series 10 and the succeeding series.
The Series No. 9 was dubbed as Al-Faf Chess Round Robin to Stepladder Knockout Final participated by 25 various nationalities. This event started on May 16 and will end on Aug. 8.
