JEDDAH, 9 August 2003 — Saudi Arabia yesterday condemned remarks by Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi accusing the Kingdom of being based on fundamentalism and extremist ideology. “The Kingdom deplores and condemns these remarks, which are baseless,” the Saudi Press Agency quoted an official source as saying.
In an interview with the American ABC television, the Libyan leader had also alleged that the Kingdom’s Wahhabi school of Islam was responsible for the rise of Al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups.
“It’s regretful that such falsifications come from the leader of an Arab state which has received the Kingdom’s support in trying times,” the source said. He highlighted Saudi Arabia’s efforts to fight terrorism.
