WAYNE, New Jersey, 10 August 2003 — Roy Jones wanted Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson or Lennox Lewis, but will settle for Corrie Sanders.
Jones’ promoter, Murad Muhammad, announced Friday that the World Boxing Association heavyweight champion has agreed to a fight with Sanders. It is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 8 in Las Vegas.
“This is basically a wonder, because we were stuck for an opponent and we didn’t want to lose our date,” Muhammad said.
Sanders, a quick southpaw from South Africa, will not be an easy opponent. He surprised the boxing world in March when he beat top contender Vladimir Klitschko in two rounds.
“When Sanders knocked out Klitschko, Roy said, ‘Go get him,’” Muhammad said. “We worked on a Holyfield fight and it fell through. We worked on Tyson and it fell through. We wanted Lennox Lewis, but he’s not fighting. We have a man who knocked out Klitschko ... so you know he’s a puncher and a bona fide heavyweight.”
