CASTLE ROCK, Colorado, 12 August 2003 — Davis Love won the International by a record margin Sunday, vaulted to the top of the PGA Tour money list and dedicated the win to his wife in hopes of emerging from a troubled time in their family.
Love’s game was on fire until his world was rocked when he found his brother in law Jeff Knight’s body outside a fishing shack in Georgia in May.
Knight, the husband of Love’s wife’s sister, was being investigated for stealing from Love’s bank account at the time of his death. A shell-shocked Love subsequently missed the cut at the following month’s US Open but rose to the occasion to contend at last month’s British Open, finishing only two strokes off the pace.
Now, Love will go into the year’s final major, this coming week’s PGA Championship, as one of the favorites after the way he dusted off a star-studded field here at Castle Pines. Love won the tournament on the first two days, opening a 10-point halfway lead in the modified Stableford format. He was never headed over the weekend and his 12-point winning margin was the largest in the 18 stagings of the event.
Love had four birdies and three bogeys Sunday to finish with 46 points, two shy of the tournament record. Retief Goosen and Vijay Singh tied for second with 34 points, with Chris DiMarco another point back in fourth place.
