HYDERABAD, 20 August 2003 — Eight school children and a driver were killed when a school bus fell into a roadside agricultural well at Deshrajpally in Karimnagar district in Andhra Pradesh yesterday morning.
Karimnagar District Superintendent of Police R.S. Praveen Kumar told this correspondent over phone that the accident occurred between 8.45 and 9 a.m. when the school bus, carrying 30 children, was proceeding on the highway between Deshrajpally and Havaldarpally villages.
“The driver, who was speeding the vehicle, suddenly lost control while negotiating a curve. The bus plunged into a roadside well. The villagers immediately rushed to the spot and organized rescue operations. Some of them got into the well and brought the children out,” Praveen Kumar said.
