RIYADH, 22 August 2003 — Jeddah Chess Club (JCC) players snatched the championship crown in the recently-concluded Riyadh Chess Tournament 2003 held at the Al Yamamah Hotel here. The event, played under the 6-round Swiss System, was hosted by the Riyadh Chess Association (RCA) under the presidency of Edd Valenzuela.
In the final round, O. Rajak of JCC demolished G. de la Pena of RCA after 42 moves using the Queens Pawn opening. Rajak posted a total score of 5.5 points and snatched the championship crown in Class “A”. Rajak received the champion’s trophy and the 21” TV set.
In Class “B”, F. Patricio of Jeddah bagged the title at a score of 5 points after he turned the tables on veteran R. Ancajas of RCA in 45 moves using an irregular opening. A championship trophy went with a VCD player.
R. Ancajas was given a gift and a trophy for finishing third after the tie-breaking game together with R. Lovedoreal. Cabato, Ancajas and Lovedoreal submitted 4 points each.
A. Sajor captured the title in Class “C”. He triumphed with a lower ‘Sonnen von Berger’ in a 4-way tie breaking game with A. Abo, E. Juanitas and K. Al-Zamil, who registered 3 points apiece. Abo was second and Juanitas came third.
Riyadh Chess Association announced that their next tournament is set in October. Details could be obtained from Rudy Sabernas or from Ramil Ancajas, Dominic Habon, Edd Valenzuela or Cesar Gervacio.
