JEDDAH, 29 August 2003 — The 1st JSMG Basketball Tournament in cooperation with Almajal ServiceMaster began at the Almajal basketball complex.
Major sponsor Abdul Moonem Al-Ayoobi Al Ansari, chief executive of Tharwat Al-Gharbia Al Haditha for food and consumer, attended the opening ceremony wished the organizers and the tournament all success.
Top officials of different companies and representatives from the Philippine Consulate also attended the ceremony. Mike Ali, Ben Garcia, owner of Ben Garcia Filipino Food Stuff, Kamal Abu Faraj, of Black Stallions company, Nivea represented by Julius Garospe, Sami, Michamich, Asad Khan, Mubarak Bin Madi and Salman Faruqui. Representatives of Power Horse energy drinks, Pepsi Cola, FedEx Company, Anadre Dela Victoria of Basamh Trading and Gerry Gatchalian of Savola graced the occasion. Tariq Abdul Hamid, general manager of Tharwat was also present.
The winners for Best Muse in the Inter Supermarket were Sarawat; in the Inter Company Division were FedEx and in the Young Once were Moda RSDAP,
The Best Uniform award in the Inter Supermarket went to SARAWAT; in the Inter Company went to FedEx and for the Young Once went Saudia City.
JSMG Chairman Dennis Eco declared the basketball tournament open followed by the ceremonial toss headed by Tariq Abdul Hamid.
In the exhibition game between Almajal ServiceMaster Team and FedEx team., the former beat the latter 87-76. The game was officiated by Basketball Referees Group (BRG) headed by Ric Lumasag along with Rey Diano and Pet Roblo.
Almajal trailed the FedEx team fopr the first three quarters, at one stage by 17 points as they failed to break the excellent FedEx defense, while falling prey to some fine Fed Ex offense.
Melchor Joaquin, Mon Bautista and Mansour Gumbay kept the FedEx stream of points coming.
But Almajal’s coach Mendoza imposed a new defensive tactic and fielded 2nd string players in the decisive quarter.Almajal came back strongly through the efforts of NoyNoy Soliveres, who had 17 points, Alex Carpio, Arvin Guinto, Allan Togonon, Oliver Caliwag and Sandy Parohinog.
