KUWAIT, 2 September 2003 — Kuwait said yesterday it had identified the remains of six people, five Kuwaitis and one Saudi, found in May in a mass grave in Iraq as prisoners of war missing since the 1990 Iraqi invasion of its neighbor.
The state-run news agency KUNA, which carried the report, said the announcement brought to 23 the number of people whose remains have been positively identified from those found at the grave in Samawa, 250 km south of Baghdad.
The Iraqi National Congress has said the remains of at least 40 Kuwaiti prisoners of war were found at the site, which may have up to 600 bodies buried in it.
