DUBAI, 8 September 2003 — Work has begun on the Dubai Humanitarian City to be established by the Dubai Development and Investment Authority (DDIA) under the directive of the Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Defense Minister Sheikh Muhammad ibn Rashid Al-Maktoum.
The city is slated to become a focal point for regional and international organizations that provide humanitarian services.
“The city aims to provide a suitable environment for humanitarian organizations and hopes to assist them in carrying out their activities in different parts of the world. The city will emerge as a center for spreading peace and handling international humanitarian causes,” said the director general of the Dubai Development and Investment Authority, Saeed Al-Muntafiq.
“This initiative underlines the commitment of the UAE to helping and supporting all international efforts for peace. It will also allow the UAE and the region in general to build stronger bonds with many other non-governmental organizations,” Al-Muntafiq added. Al-Muntafiq also announced the appointment of Saeed ibn Suloom as director of the Dubai Humanitarian City.
Ibn Suloom said the city “will be spread over 3.6 million square feet and located just 10 to 15 minutes away from Dubai International Airport.”
