JEDDAH, 12 September 2003 — In the first JSMG Basketball Tournament in Cooperation with Almajal Servicemaster sponsored by Tharwat Al-Gharbia Al-Haditha, Mario Morales of Giant Store scored 27 points to give his team a 10 points 75-65 win over the sponsors, Tharwat.
The trio of Morales, Rafael and Asperga ignited the Giant’s fastbreak attack to pull away from the Tharwat defenders. Nelson Rafael had 13 and Romel Carlon 12 for the Giant team (1-0). Allan Zorilla scored 23 points while Rhodel Amores & Bong De Leon added 15 & 10 points respectively. It was Tharwat’s 2nd straight loss.
In another game, Julius Consignado gathered 20 points while Anthony Manguera had 16 and Dino Aguilar 12, as Al Mashwali beat an undermanned Arab News 93-61. The latter were without their middle men Arquerro and Avengonzado.
Al Mashwali took advantage of it with their trapping defense which smothered the Arab News offense. Talastas led his team with 12 points.
Lanao Lakers scored an electrifying 61-60 win over Saudia City with Maulana garnering 27 points for the Lakers. Saudia City had the chance to send the game into overtime with Magno’s 3 free throws with 12 seconds left for the buzzer.
But he missed the 2nd of his 3 free throws, and when it was Lanao’s turn to set their offense, Saudia gifted Lanao two charities, which were missed with only 6 seconds left. Saudia had one more chance to win it outright, Lanao’s Sultan stripped Magno of the ball at the final horn.
Bin Dawood beat Sawary Snickers 80-69 with Unas leading Bin Dawood’s offensive charge with 37 points. He was ably assisted by Marmay 17 and Amino 13. Dela Cruz of Sawary scored 17 points, Teruel 15 and Garcia 14 but their efforts were not enough to overhaul Bin Dawood.
FedEx Express crushed Al-Zaman Cagers by a thumping 56 points, winning 95-39. Joaquin and Ubida scored 16 points apiece to spearhead the balanced scoring of FedEx along with their teammate Dizon 13 and Collado 11.
It was FedEx’s first win in two outings. Only Belarmino 16 and De Chavez 9 stood out for Al-Zaman (0-2 ).
