MILAN, 29 September 2003 — Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko struck twice for AC Milan as the European champions beat Lecce 3-0 in Serie A yesterday.

Second half goals from Vincenzo Montella, Francesco Totti and Marco Delvecchio helped AS Roma to a comfortable 3-0 home win over struggling Ancona. Milan and Roma join Juventus at the top of the standings on 10 points each after four games.

On Saturday, champions Juventus won 2-0 at Reggina while Inter Milan were held to a goalless draw at Udinese and Lazio were facing Empoli later.

With Filippo Inzaghi sidelined through injury the pressure was on Shevchenko, partnered by Danish striker Jon Dahl Tomasson, to deliver the firepower for Carlo Ancelotti’s side and he responded in style.

The Ukrainian put Milan in front in the 21st minute when, after Rui Costa’s shot had come out off the post, Shevchenko stroked home a low cross from Cafu.

The former Dynamo Kiev striker doubled the advantage in the 69th minute with a superb solo strike. Parma needed a 79th minute equalizer from Brazilian Adriano to give them a 1-1 draw at home to Siena, while Sampdoria scored twice inside the last three minutes to beat Brescia 2-1.

Andrea Zanchetta scored twice for Chievo, including a stunning 30-meter free-kick, as the Verona side crushed Perugia 4-1.

Hat Tricks Give Charlton,

Everton Wins

In London, Kevin Lisbie and Steve Watson both scored premier league hat tricks yesterday as Charlton Athletic came from behind to beat Liverpool 3-2 and Everton demolished Leeds United 4-0.

Fulham earned a convincing 2-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park, while Manchester City were hosting Tottenham Hotspur in a later kick-off.

The place to be for goals was The Valley, where Charlton stunned Liverpool thanks to their Jamaica striker Lisbie.

Czech midfielder Vladimir Smicer gave Liverpool an early lead, brilliantly put through by Australia playmaker Harry Kewell, but a double strike by Lisbie put Charlton in front just before the break.

England striker Michael Owen equalized within minutes of the re-start from the penalty spot but Lisbie, who has been regularly barracked by Charlton fans, answered his critics in style with a superb solo winner in the 83rd minute.

Kewell hit the woodwork in stoppage time but Charlton held on for a first home league win of the season that left them 12th in the table on eight points, while Liverpool slipped to eighth with 11 points.

Lisbie, a London-born product of Charlton’s academy, told Sky Sports: “It’s my first hat-trick with the first team. It’s always good to be scoring but a hat-trick against Liverpool of all teams is even better.”
