NEW DELHI, 15 October 2003 — Officials from India and Singapore yesterday signed an agreement on defense-related technology and intelligence sharing.
The deal was signed by visiting Singapore Defense Minister Teo Chee Hean and his Indian counterpart George Fernandes.
The pact also allows Singaporean armed forces access to training areas used by Indian forces and joint air exercises.
So far, the two countries conduct only joint naval exercises, a Defense Ministry statement said.
Teo, who arrived in India on Sunday on a four-day visit, earlier held discussions with Fernandes on tackling terrorism and high-seas piracy.
Teo is the first Singapore defense minister to come to India on an official visit.
Communal Violence Kills Two
At least two people were killed in communal clashes between Muslims and members of the oppressed dalit community in the past two days.
At least two localities in Agra — site of the famed Taj Mahal — were under curfew as violence continued unabated despite the deployment of large numbers of police.
