JEDDAH, 17 October 2003 — Chess tournament first-timer Bonnie Javier of EKC-SV Cargo Manifesting pulled off a pleasant surprise by upsetting CCC regular entrant Ed Valle of SIDC Metal Sheet Co. in the Seawave Resort Stepladder Knockout Final (Series 10) at Al Faf Hotel organized by Community Chess Club.

Javier and Valle were among the pairings who did not participate in phase one round robin event and applied their option to be chartered in the struggle bracket of the Seawave Resort Stepladder Knockout Final. After an intense game of active chess Javier advanced to the next ladder and is scheduled to meet Irshad Hussain of Trans Desert.

In game one of Sicilian Defense, Valle consumed ocean of time. It was Javier composure and ability to handle the stress of the game that helped him win the opening set. In the second game Valle dug his own grave by becoming to passive in handling the Ruy Lopez the opening and Javier gave him no chance to level the best of two games.

In another development, the first important game to end was played between Joey Cadalin of SIDC Metal Sheet and Rod Manansala (Series 9 second round winner) where Cadalin got a good grip of Scandinavian Defense with white pieces.

Later with simple tactics, Cadalin won an exchange and the rest was child’s play. Robatsch Defense was the second opening game of Cadalin and Manansala. Cadalin displayed fantastic technique to overcome the challenge of Manansala. Cadalin won the set at 2-0.

Abe Abordo of EKC-SV Cabin won by default against Kokoy Cagubcub. Other schedules are: Keith Mcloskey of Sharbatly against Ahmed Khatooa of Arifo. Joey Cadalin versus Marvin Franco of Bashawri Optical. Bonnie Javier vis-a-vis Irshad Hussain of Trans Desert.
