LONDON, 21 October 2003 — South Korea’s Injin Chi and England’s Michael Brodie look set meet again to decide the WBC world featherweight championship after their bruising fight on Saturday ended in chaos and controversy.
The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC) said they will demand a rematch and the World Boxing Council are ready to grant their request in a bid to save their reputation following the ludicrous scenes which followed the bout in Manchester.
Chi was originally declared the winner by the narrowest of margins, but nearly an hour later WBC president Jose Sulaiman insisted he had accidentally deducted one point too many from Brodie for a first round headbutt — altering the outcome to a majority draw. “We are in meetings and will have a look at the reports but we will be calling for a rematch,” said the BBBC assistant general secretary Robert Smith.
Brodie’s manager Jack Trickett said he would head calls for a rematch. “Michael deserves to be a world champion so much because he has proved himself so many times. Chi had no marks on him after he’d fought Erik Morales two years ago but when I saw him at the airport on Sunday he looked like he’d been run over by a steamroller.”
