UNIONDALE, 29 December 2003 — Mark Parrish scored the game-winning goal for the second straight night as the New York Islanders ended the Toronto Maple Leafs 16-game point streak with a 3-1 win in the National Hockey League on Saturday.

Toronto’s point streak is the second longest since the NHL started awarding points for overtime losses in 1999-2000. The Maple Leafs went 14-0-1-1 during their run.

Parrish scored the overtime winner against the New Jersey Devils on Friday night, while the Maple Leafs beat the New York Rangers 6-5, also in overtime.

But on Saturday night, the Islanders carried the play for most of the night, out-shooting Toronto 28-20, to win their fourth straight game and sixth straight on home ice.

Toronto’s road unbeaten streak was also snapped at eight games (7-0-1), just one game off the franchise record set in 1947-48.

Parrish added an insurance marker with seven seconds remaining and Mattias Weinhandl, with his first strike of the season, added the other New York goal.

In Washington, Daniel Briere scored the winning goal and added an assist to pace the Buffalo Sabres to a 3-1 win over the Capitals. Miroslav Satan added a goal and two assists and Jochen Hecht rounded out the scoring with an empty-netter in the final minute of the game.

Stars 4 Blue Jackets 3

In Columbus, Mike Modano had a goal and an assist and Richard Matvichuk buried the game-winner to give the Dallas Stars a 4-3 win over the Blue Jackets. Modano, Brendan Morrow and Teppo Numminen scored to give the Stars a 3-1 lead in the first period.

Hurricanes 2 Canadiens 1 (OT)

In Raleigh, Sean Hill scored a power-play goal 39 seconds into overtime to give the Hurricanes a 2-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens. Hill opened the scoring with a power-play marker in the second period before Richard Zednik tied the game on the man-advantage in the third.

Lightning 4 Bruins 2

In Tampa, Martin St. Louis scored a pair of shorthanded goals in the second period to help the Lightning double the Boston Bruins 4-2. Vincent LeCavalier and Brad Richards also scored and Fredrik Modin picked up a pair of assists to give the Lightning their first win in four games.

Panthers 3 Mighty Ducks 2

In Sunrise, Olli Jokinen scored the winning goal in the third period to give the Panthers a 3-2 come-from-behind win over the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

Devils 2 Penguins 0

In Pittsburgh, Corey Schwab turned aside 21 shots for his first shutout of the season, backing the New Jersey Devils to a 2-0 win over the Penguins.

Predators 3 Coyotes 1

In Phoenix, Scott Walker had a goal and two assists to help the Nashville Predators to a 3-1 win over the Coyotes. Marek Zidlicky, with the winning goal in the second period, and Martin Erat also scored as the Predators won for the first time in four games.

Avalanche 3 Flyers 2 (OT)

In Denver, Milan Hejduk scored 1:42 into overtime to lift the Avalanche to a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. Teemu Selanne scored in the second period and Joe Sakic tied the game with 1:17 left in the third.

Oilers 6 Canucks 2

In Vancouver, Ryan Smyth had a goal and an assist in the third period as the Edmonton Oilers scored five straight goals to stun the Canucks 6-2. Brad Isbister, Mike York, Jarret Stoll, Radek Dvorak and Ales Hemsky scored the other goals for the Oilers, who beat the Canucks for the first time in eight tries while winning for just the third time in 16 games.

Sharks 4 Kings 4

In Los Angeles, Sean Avery’s goal in the third period gave the Kings a 4-4 tie with the San Jose Sharks. Zigmund Palffy, Eric Belanger and Jozef Stumpel scored the other L.A. goals.
