NEW YORK, 17 January 2004 — Matthew Barnaby scored with 1:49 left in regulation time to earn the New York Rangers a 3-3 tie with the New Jersey Devils on Thursday.

Mike Dunham made 30 saves for the hosts Rangers, who were out-shot 35-33 by the Devils as they again failed to beat one of their archrivals.

The Rangers have recorded a solitary win from their last 36 games against the Devils (1-21-13-1) since February 1997.

Martin Brodeur is one of the chief reasons why. He has been in goal for every game of that streak and played his 50th straight contest in the series against the Rangers, also making 30 stops. The Devils last lost to the Rangers in October 2001, going 7-0-4 since then. New Jersey was without captain Scott Stevens for the fourth successive game. Stevens has been slow to recover from the flu and the Devils say he may be out even longer as they are also concerned he may still be feeling the effects of a hit he took earlier this season.

In Buffalo, Sergei Samsonov tallied in the second period to lift the Boston Bruins to a 1-0 win over the Sabres. Felix Potvin made 27 saves for his 31st career shutout to lead the Bruins to their fifth straight victory.

Boston, unbeaten in seven games (6-0-1), blanked the Sabres for the first time in nearly 10 years.

In Tampa Bay, Martin St. Louis netted a first-period hat trick to power the Lightning to a 5-4 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. It was the second career hat trick for St. Louis and both have come against the Hurricanes.

In Ottawa, Todd White and Zdeno Chara bagged third-period power-play goals to help the Senators rally to a 4-4 tie with the New York Islanders.

In St. Louis, Eric Boguniecki recorded two goals, including the game-winner midway through the third period, to give the Blues a 5-3 triumph over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

In Nashville, Scott Hartnell tallied the go-ahead goal on a power play with 47 seconds remaining in the third period to lift the Predators to a 4-3 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.

In Edmonton, Ales Hemsky netted in the first period to give the Oilers a 1-0 win over the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Tommy Salo made 28 saves for his second shutout in four games as the Oilers picked up their second straight home victory.

In Denver, Peter Forsberg scored twice to earn the Colorado Avalanche a 4-1 win over the Dallas Stars. Dan Hinote and Brad Larsen also tallied while Andrei Nikolishin added two assists to help the Avalanche to their fourth consecutive home victory.

In San Jose, Alex Korolyuk had a goal and an assist to lead the Sharks past the Vancouver Canucks 3-1.
