ROME, 19 January 2004 — AS Roma captain Francesco Totti scored twice in a 3-1 victory over Sampdoria yesterday to ensure his side maintained top spot at the halfway point of the Serie A season.

The result gave Roma 42 points — a new half-season record in Serie A — three ahead of champions Juventus, who beat Siena 4-2 after an Alessandro Del Piero hat trick, and six ahead of AC Milan, who play Brescia later.

Fourth-placed Inter Milan slipped 11 points behind the leaders when they lost to an injury-time goal by Empoli striker Tommaso Rocchi.

Inter striker Christian Vieri, who was fined earlier in the week for missing an Italian Cup match and was rumored to be on the brink of a move to England or Spain, was left out, fuelling rumors of a falling out between himself and the club.

Roma came back from a goal down to secure their victory after Sampdoria striker Fabio Bazzani quickly showed the deadly finishing that has made his side the most feared of the promoted teams this season.

Bazzani muscled between Roma defenders Christian Panucci and Traianos Dellas to fire past keeper Carlo Zotti in the sixth minute.

Norwegian striker John Carew equalized four minutes later, heading in from a corner, and Roma could have gone ahead soon after had Brazilian winger Mancini not headed wide of an open goal from close range.

Juventus had labored to beat Sampdoria and Perugia in their last two league matches, but showed no mercy against promoted Siena at a snowy Stadio delle Alpi.

Del Piero put the home side ahead from the penalty spot on the quarter-hour mark and David Trezeguet doubled the home side’s advantage in the 37th minute, stealing ahead of his marker to poke home a Gianluca Zambrotta cross.

Del Piero converted his second spot kick after 59 minutes and completed his hat trick two minutes later when Delli Carri spilled a pass, allowing him to run into the area and shoot low into the net.

Elsewhere, two goals in the first four minutes by strikers Valeri Bojinov and Ernesto Chevanton helped Lecce to a 3-1 win over fellow southerners Reggina, while Serie A’s only winless teams, Ancona and Perugia, wasted the chance to get off the mark by drawing 0-0.

Arsenal Go Top After Controversial Win at Villa

In London, Arsenal surged back to the top of the Premier League yesterday as Thierry Henry scored two controversial goals to secure a 2-0 away win over Aston Villa.

The victory was made all the sweeter for Arsenal as title rivals Chelsea were later held to a goalless home draw by Birmingham City — a day after Manchester United lost 1-0 to lowly Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Celtic Stay Clear With Battling Win Over Hearts

In Glasgow, unbeaten leaders Celtic stayed on course to regain the Scottish Premier League title after Stilian Petrov secured them a 1-0 win at Hearts yesterday.

Third-placed Hearts matched Celtic for the majority of an absorbing contest at Tynecastle but Petrov’s 27th minute strike was enough to keep the visitors 11 points clear of champions Rangers, who beat Motherwell 1-0 on Saturday.

Deportivo Close In on Valencia With Win Over Zaragoza

In Madrid, Deportivo Coruna made up ground at the top of the Primera Liga with a crushing 4-1 win at home to Real Zaragoza yesterday. The Galicians had to come from a goal down to claim the victory after midfielder Juan Carlos Valeron had bundled into his own net on five minutes.

But the Spanish international atoned for his early error when he had a hand in Diego Tristan’s equalizer midway through the first half and then put his side ahead with a fine glancing header early in the second.
