DUBAI, 25 January 2004 — Qatar’s Civil Aviation Department and the US Bechtel Company yesterday signed a contract estimated at $2.5 billion for the design and management of a new international airport to be built near Doha.
The Qatari News Agency QNA said the board director of the Civil Aviation Council and delegate member Abdulaziz ibn Mohammad Al-Naimi signed the contract on behalf of Qatar, while deputy executive director James Hoften, signed on behalf of Bechtel.
Al-Naimi said the first phase works of the new airport would run through 60 months. The new airport is expected to handle annually 12 million arrivals and transit passengers on completion in 2008.
