MANAMA, 2 February 2004 — Six people, including a Bahraini family of four, were injured in a seven-car accident in Manama. The accident was the fault of an intoxicated Saudi who drove his car into six others as they waited at an intersection at 1:45 a.m.
The youngest member of the Bahraini family, a 2-year-old boy, sustained an epidural hemorrhage. He remains in critical care after being rushed to a Manama hospital where doctors operated on him shortly after arrival. His 5-year-old sister suffered a broken right leg; his mother suffered a broken right arm and a back injury and his father, Abdullah, was released after being treated.
The intoxicated Saudi, Abdullah Saeed Al-Ghatani and a Filipino passenger in another car were also taken to hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and released.
Al-Ghatani, a government employee from Dammam, was taken into police custody after his release from the hospital. He will appear in court after Eid.
Abdullah Juma Saad told Arab News that he and his family were returning home after visiting relatives. “I cannot remember how and what happened,” he said. “We were on our way home and when I came to, I was in a hospital bed.”
Six other people, including three Saudi brothers who were returning to the Eastern Province after shopping in Bahrain, escaped uninjured from the accident.
