SANAA, 16 February 2004 — The Yemeni government decided yesterday to introduce long-delayed hikes in fuel products ranging from 25 to more than 100 percent, in a move likely to spark widespread protests, a senior official said. “The Cabinet of Prime Minister Abdul Kader Bajammal decided at an emergency session yesterday to raise the prices of fuel products,” the government official told AFP, requesting anonymity. The price of diesel will more than double to 40 riyals (around 21 cents) a liter from 17 riyals, while a liter of gasoline will cost 50 riyals (around 27 cents) instead of the current 35 riyals.
