NEW YORK, 20 February 2004 — Brett Hull tied Dave Andreychuk’s NHL power-play goals record with his 263rd strike to help the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes in National Hockey League play on Wednesday in Detroit.

Hull’s goal put the Wings 2-0 ahead in the second period, tying him with Andreychuk, who is still playing with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The son of Hall of Famer Bobby Hull now has 737 goals in 18 NHL seasons, behind just Wayne Gretzky (894) and Gordie Howe (801) on the all-time list.

Kris Draper added a pair of goals for the Red Wings, who have just one loss in their last nine games (6-1-2).

The Coyotes are just 1-9-1 in their last 11 games. Mathieu Schneider and Mathieu Dandenault scored the other goals for the Red Wings. Chris Gratton and Fredrik Sjostrom scored for the Coyotes, who have lost two straight games. Phoenix is nine points out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference.

In Buffalo, Roberto Luongo made 41 saves to help the Florida Panthers tie the Sabres 1-1. Marcus Nilson scored the lone goal for Florida with less than 11 minutes remaining in the third period to help the Panthers snap a two-game losing streak.

In Uniondale, Mariusz Czerkawski scored a pair of power-play goals to lead the New York Islanders to a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The hapless Penguins have now lost 16 games in a row. Roman Hamlik and Kenny Jonsson scored the other goals for the Islanders, who moved into sole possession of seventh place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Tomas Surovy, Ric Jackman and Milan Kraft scored for Pittsburgh, which last won on Jan. 12 against Philadelphia.

In Nashville, newly-acquired Steve Sullivan scored three goals and had one assist to lead the Predators to a 7-3 win over the San Jose Sharks.

Kimmo Timonen scored a pair of goals for Nashville, while Scott Walker had a goal and three assists.

Greg Johnson scored the other goal for the Predators, while Marek Zidlicky added five assists.

In Denver, Ryan Smyth had a goal and two assists to lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 5-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche. Tommy Salo had to make just 14 saves for the Oilers. Peter Forsberg was a late scratch for Colorado with a strained hip.

In Anaheim, Vaclav Prospal scored with less than two minutes remaining in the third period to lead the Mighty Ducks to a 3-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Sergei Fedorov added an empty net marker for the Ducks, while Cam Severson scored his first goal of the season.

In Los Angeles, Mike Modano scored twice to give the Dallas Stars a 4-3 win over the Kings.
