RIYADH, 20 February 2004 — Tournament leaders D'Marvelous unleashed their power as they kept a tight grip at the No. 1 spot despite a brief challenge from defending champion Al Mishari Pinbusters. The numbers said it all as D'Marvelous whipped the Pinbusters 24-11 on total pinfalls of 4,084-3,843 to become Team of the Week during the seventh session of the NAK Park USA Sunday Night Bowling League 8th Conference at the Riyadh Bowling Club lanes here.
Although five other teams crossed the 4,000-pins mark, none came close to approximating D' Marvelous' performance. As it turned out, it was Blue Blood that ranked second best after its 22-15 victory over Schneider Electric on total pinfalls of 4,091 and 4,030.
Ernie Quiambao of D'Invaders ruled the race for the individual Bowler of the Week honors, shooting the high series of 930 on games of 191, 254, 199 and 246. The next two places in the individual standings were occupied by players from the week's best two teams namely Fhel Ramos of D'Marvelous with 915 and Ed Maduro of Blue Blood with 906. HTG-Margie sent previous week honoree Unlimited VI reeling to a 20-16 defeat on total pinfalls of 4,030 and 3,928. Saudi Tornado downed D'Invaders 21-19 (4,048-4,097) and Jadawel Bowling Club rolled back Okey Lang 15-10 (3,810-3,697) in the other matches in the five-man team league event.Nestor Tercio and Jim Lasaca also did pretty well for D'Marvelous with solid outputs of 840 and 816 to go with the 727 by Benito Santos, 417 by Mar De Lima and 370 by Freddie Aquino.
Frank Ranera tossed in 814 in support of Maduro, while teammates Nestor Ranido, Benjie Macatuno, Shakur Kamlian and Jess Frias carded 777, 656, 380 and 168. The week produced a lot of good scores with 21 bowlers hitting 800 or better including a pair of 882s from Jadawel's Boy Bartolome and Schneider Electric's Angel Pantoja, 859 from Tornado's Yasser Mohammed and 845s from HTG's Tony Tapayan and Unlimited IV's Saud Egil.
Meanwhile, RBC bowling manager Rommel Romano announced the FOBR (Filipino Overseas Bowlers of Riyadh) will stage the Qatar Airways Pre-summer Cup Open Bowling Tournament at RBC. The qualifying round is set from Feb. 21 to March 31, semifinal April 1 and final April 2. Cash prizes totaling SR50,000 plus two return air tickets to Manila during the opening night and final will be at stake. The daily qualifying will be from 4 p.m. to 12 midnight.
