RIYADH, 27 February 2004 — Coverage of the Shoura Council on Saudi television will increase, a prominent member of the 120-member consultative body told Arab News. The program will now be aired every Thursday and Friday, Ihsan Ba Hulaiga said yesterday.
“The idea behind televising an expanded program focusing on the work of the Shoura Council is to acquaint the people with the Shoura system,” he said.
The program began as a 30-minute slot several months ago. The expanded program will last an hour on both Thursdays and Fridays throughout the year.
It will telecast reports and briefings of the Shoura Council. “The program seeks to involve the public in the activities of the council. The TV program will debut on weekends on channel one,” Shoura officials said.
So far the council’s sessions have not been televised, but those interested can attend the proceedings of the Council on request or by invitation.
The Shoura now hears the views of some nominated female experts when discussing issues related to women.
