NEW YORK, 9 March 2004 — Oleg Saprykin scored twice and Craig Conroy had a goal and two assists to lead the Calgary Flames to a 7-1 rout over the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday.
The Avalanche suffered their worst home loss since the franchise moved to Denver from Quebec City for the 1995-96 season.
Miikka Kiprusoff made 21 saves in goal for the Flames, who completed a 2-2 road trip and moved into sixth place in the Western Conference standings with the win.
Colorado continues to struggle at home. The Avalanche have just one win in their past 10 home games (1-5-3-1) and just two wins in their past 11 overall games (2-6-2-1).
Philippe Sauve had a rough afternoon in goal for the Avalanche, giving up all seven goals on 33 shots, as rumors continue that the Avalanche will attempt to acquire an experienced goalie before Tuesday’s NHL trade deadline. Jarome Iginla and Chris Clark both added a goal and an assist for the Flames, while Rhett Warrener added three assists.
Jordan Leopold and Krzysztof Oliwa scored the other goals for the Flames, who out-shot the Avalanche 33-22, including 13-6 in the first period and 10-5 in the third. Calgary broke open the game with three unanswered goals in the second period to take a 4-1 lead before adding three more goals in the final frame.
