NEW YORK, 16 March 2004 — Brendan Shanahan scored all three goals, including the game-winner 40 seconds into overtime, as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Nashville Predators 3-2 in National Hockey League play Sunday in Detroit. Shanahan’s 16th career hat trick helped give the Red Wings 96 points, most in the NHL, as Detroit stretched its unbeaten streak to eight games (7-0-1).

Shanahan drilled a shot from the face off circle past Tomas Vokoun early in the overtime to also move into a tie for 17th place on the all-time goal scoring list with former Boston Bruins great John Bucyk with 556.

Jeremy Stevenson opened the scoring for the Predators with a power play goal at 5:16 of the first period, but Shanahan answered that with a power play goal of his own 3:17 later, leaving the teams tied 1-1 after the first period.

Denis Arkhipov put Nashville in front with his goal just 2:20 into the second period, but Shanahan again tied the score at 9:16 of the third period, setting the stage for overtime.

Chris Chelios added a pair of assists for the Red Wings, while Curtis Joseph made 27 saves in goal. Vokoun made 29 saves for the Predators, who were outshot 31-29. The Predators, in a battle for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, are now winless in five games (0-2-2-1).

Aleksey Morozov scored a pair of goals as the Pittsburgh Penguins managed a 3-3 tie with the Philadelphia Flyers in Pittsburgh.

Luc Robitaille, Trent Klatt and Nathan Dempsey all had a goal and two assists as the Los Angeles Kings beat the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 5-1.

Roman Turek made 25 saves for his second shutout of the season as the Calgary Flames scored a crucial 3-0 win over the St. Louis Blues.

Alexandre Daigle scored the game-winning goals and added an assist as the Minnesota Wild edged the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2.

Pert Nedved had two assists to help the Edmonton Oilers defeat the Ottawa Senators 3-1.
