RIYADH, 18 March 2004 — A new cement plant will be built in the Saudi capital following an agreement between Yamama Saudi Cement Company and Polysius Thyssen Krupp Technologies, an engineering steel company from Germany. Yamama has awarded the $300 million contract to Polysius, a subsidiary of Thyssen Krupp to build the plant which will double output capacity from 9,000 to 19,000 tons per day.
“This is the biggest project to be handled by a German firm in the Kingdom and it demonstrates the confidence held by the Kingdom in German technology,” said the Counselor for Press and Political Affairs Elmo Jakobs. Under the agreement the German company will plan, manage, supply technology, and act as consultants for the plant.
Construction work has been sub-contracted to a Turkish firm. Yamama Saudi Cement Company was launched in 1961 with a paid-up capital of SR 450 million, and is ranked 44th among the top 100 companies in the Kingdom.
