RIYADH, 20 March 2004 — Former Sri Lankan Ambassador to the Kingdom Abdul Cader Markar died in Colombo on Thursday .
Markar, who served three years in Saudi Arabia, was instrumental in forming the Sri Lankan Expatriates Society (SLES). He was also responsible for streamlining the accounting procedures of the embassy in Riyadh and doubled the embassy’s revenues during his tour.
Markar also took a keen interest in the problems of domestic workers in the Kingdom, who form 80 percent of the Lankan population here.
He prepared a special report to Colombo on their protection and prepared a set of guidelines for the incoming workers.
He is survived by his wife and three children.
