JEDDAH, 22 March 2004 — Two factories along the Jeddah-Makkah highway caught fire early yesterday evening, prompting a massive response from the Civil Defense.
Civil Defense helicopters and some 15 fire trucks brought more than 100 firefighters, who waged a four-hour battle with the blaze.
Hundreds of bystanders looked on as the Ceder Center for Honey and Dates, and Henaa Sweets Factory suffered major structural damage.
The Red Crescent Society dispatched seven ambulances to the scene; however, no injuries were reported.
The Highway Patrol was also on hand to direct traffic as many motorists pulled over for a better look. Others took up position on a nearby bridge.
