RIYADH, 28 March 2004 — The recently separated Filipino twins have started smiling and feeding by mouth again, according to the head of the medical team that separated them.
They are “interacting with their mother” and their digestive system is back to functioning normally, said Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeea, the chief executive officer of the National Guard Health Affairs.
Dr. Al-Rabeea said the twins have been in stable condition since the 14-hour operation separating them at King Abdul Aziz City on March 20.
They are responding well and growing more active by the day, he added.
“Because of the stability, the central venous lines, arterial catheters and antibiotics have all been stopped, and it is expected that the twins will leave the intensive care unit within a few days,” he said.
“The twins will require another eight weeks for rehabilitation and physical therapy prior to their return to the Philippines,” Dr. Al-Rabeea said.
They will have to undergo various procedures to remove all the surgery marks from their bodies, but all will eventually disappear and the twins will be able to lead normal lives.
