KUWAIT CITY, 28 March 2004 — Kuwait has received over $9.5 billion in war reparations from Iraq, but will press for more funds for Baghdad’s 1990-1991 occupation of the emirate, an official said in comments published yesterday.
“Kuwait has received $9.5 billion out of $38.5 billion in war reparations approved by the United Nations,” Khaled Al-Mudhaf, head of Kuwait’s compensation authority was quoted as saying by the Al-Qabas daily.
A decision by the UN Compensation Commission (UNCC) to reduce deductions from Iraqi oil sales from 25 percent to five percent after last year’s fall of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein “has directly harmed Kuwaiti claims, especially major claims by companies and state agencies,” he said.
Kuwait has filed compensation claims worth more than $170 billion to the UNCC, set up by the UN Security Council after Saddam’s forces invaded the emirate in 1990 and occupied it for seven months.
