NEW YORK, 29 March 2004 — Manny Legace continued to shine in goal Saturday in relief of Dominik Hasek and Curtis Joseph, making 27 saves to lead the host Detroit Red Wings past the Colorado Avalanche 2-0.
A season-ending groin problem for Hasek and constant injuries to Joseph have meant that career back-up Legace has been handling the bulk of the recent netminding workload.
Detroit completed a two-game sweep of the Avalanche to keep hold of first place in the Western Conference standings. The Red Wings are 9-1-1 in their last 11 home games.
In Philadelphia, Stephen Valiquette made 38 saves and Jaromir Jagr had a goal and an assist to propel the New York Rangers to a 3-1 win over the Flyers.
In St. Louis, Bryce Salvador scored at 1:50 of the extra period to help the Blues beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 and tie an NHL record with their 11th overtime victory.
In Calgary, Shean Donovan tallied 1:06 into overtime to earn the Flames a 3-2 triumph over the Los Angeles Kings.
In New York, Kevin Weekes made 36 saves as the Carolina Hurricanes dented the Islanders’ playoff chances with a 3-2 victory.
In Boston, Sergei Samsonov’s second goal of the game with 27.6 seconds left in overtime handed the Bruins a 3-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens.
In Toronto, Bryan McCabe scored the equalizer in the third period as the Maple Leafs tied the Ottawa Senators 2-2. Owen Nolan of the Leafs and Patrick Lalime of the Senators left the game with injuries.
In Pittsburgh, Konstantin Koltsov’s third-period goal secured the Penguins a 2-2 tie with the Buffalo Sabres.
In Sunrise, Kari Lehtonen made 30 saves for his first NHL shutout as the Atlanta Thrashers blanked the Florida Panthers 3-0.
