JEDDAH, 2 April 2004 — Saudi border guards foiled an attempt to smuggle large quantities of explosives including hand grenades in Asir and Jizan regions in the southern part of the Kingdom and arrested three weapons dealers, including one Eritrean, along the Kingdom’s border with Yemen.
According to Okaz daily, 19 revolvers, 400 sticks of dynamite, 11 bombs and around 120,000 bullets were seized by border guards in the provinces of Asir and Jizan over the past few weeks.
An Eritrean dealer was arrested while others fled during an exchange of gunfire with guards in Asir.
Two other dealers were questioned in the mountainous area of Jizan, the paper said quoting the Director General of Saudi Border Security, Gen. Talal Mohsen Anqwi and other senior coast guard officers in the two regions.
The Kingdom frequently announces arrests and arms seizures along the 1,800-kilometer frontier.
