SANAA, 7 March 2004 — At least seven people were killed and 35 injured yesterday when a truck overturned in a crowded market place in the central Yemeni district of Yarim.
The driver apparently lost control while driving on an incline, traffic police officials in Yarim, 170 km south of Sanaa, said.
He said the truck slumped down toward the open-air market and crashed into 11 smaller trucks and cars, eventually turning over and destroying several shops.
The truck was loaded with shipping containers that had fallen off, causing the accident, it was reported.
An official at the Yahsub Public Hospital in Yarim said 20 injured had been admitted to the hospital.
Among the injured were four Indians who were driving from Sanaa to Aden.
