NEW YORK, 12 May 2004 — Luis Gonzalez hit three home runs and had four RBI to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 12-8 win over the New York Mets in the lone game in the National League in Phoenix on Monday.

Gonzalez hit a two-run homer in the first and solo shots in the third and fourth innings as Arizona hit five home runs in the first four innings to take a 12-6 lead.

Gonzalez had three of the Diamondbacks 14 hits in the game and also scored three runs in the opener of a four-game series to snap a four-game losing streak.

It was his second career three-homer game. Chad Tracy and Steve Finley also homered for the Diamondbacks, while Tracy had three RBI and two hits.

Finley also had two hits, as did Shea Hillenbrand and Alex Cintron.

Casey Daigle (2-1) went five innings for the win, allowing seven runs — six earned — on 12 hits with one strikeout and three walks. James Baldwin (0-1), making his first start in the majors since 2002 after being called up from Tripe-A Norfolk, was rocked for six runs on seven hits in just two innings. Reliever Dan Wheeler followed him and was blasted for six runs on six hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Baldwin gave up two of the homers while Wheeler allowed the other three, all before the fourth inning was complete. Ty Wigginton went 5-for-5 for the Mets, who had 17 hits off four Arizona pitchers. Mike Piazza had three hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Mets, while Eric Valent had three hits and scored three runs for New York.

Broussard Leads Indians to Victory Over Red Sox

Ben Broussard had three hits, including two of Cleveland’s eight doubles, and drove in a run as the Indians beat the Red Sox 10-6 in American League action in Boston on Monday.

Victor Martinez and Travis Hafner both had two hits and drove in two runs for the Indians, who pounded out a total of 13 hits to snap a five-game losing streak.

Ronnie Belliard also had a pair of hits and scored two runs for the Tribe. Belliard is leading the AL in hitting with a .383 average. Chad Durbin (3-3) picked up the win in relief for the Indians, relieving starter Jeff D’Amico after he allowed four runs in 2 2/3 innings. Durbin allowed one run on one hit over 2 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking two. Three relievers finished up to complete an 11-hitter.

Matt Lawton, Lou Merloni and Coco Crisp all drove in a run for the Indians, who went ahead for good by scoring two runs in the fourth inning. Brian Daubach homered, had two hits and drove in three runs for the Red Sox, while Jason Varitek also homered and scored two runs.

Johnny Damon added three hits for the Red Sox and scored a run.

Kim Byung-hyun (1-1) allowed six runs — four earned — on five hits over 3 1/3 innings to take the loss. He walked three and struck out none. Manny Ramirez missed the game for the Red Sox as he was being sworn in as a US citizen in Miami.

Boston General Manager Theo Epstein said he was notified in advance and Ramirez was given permission to miss the game.

In the only other game, Orlando Hudson hit a pair of home runs to help the Toronto Blue Jays rout the Royals 9-3 in Kansas City. Hudson hit the first two homers of his career as a right-handed batter and also drove in four runs with three hits to help Toronto win its sixth straight game.

The Blue Jays scored six runs in the first inning off starter and loser Brian Anderson.

Anderson (1-4) wound up going five innings, allowing eight runs — four earned — on 13 hits with one strikeout and one walk. Pat Hentgen (2-2) allowed two runs on four hits over 6 1/3 innings to get the win. He struck out five and walked two. Reed Johnson had three hits, including a homer for the Blue Jays, while Frank Catalanotto and Vernon Wells both had three hits and drove in a run.
