DOHA, 28 October 2004 — In a major first for Qatar’s dynamic telecom company, Q-Tel yesterday opened its own high-speed connection to the passion of the all-new 17th Gulf Cup.

Signing a landmark ‘platinum partner’ deal with Qatar Sports International (QSi) the official marketing rights holders, Q-Tel becomes QSi’s second platinum event partner in almost as many weeks, joining Etihad Airlines in this prestigious eight-nation, multi-sports, 17th Gulf Cup — the Gulf’s premier sports event.

This year’s Gulf Cup has been “uniquely and cleverly” re-packaged by hosts Qatar, into a major sporting competition involving the national football teams of eight Gulf regional nations, in a new-look event with basketball, handball and volleyball also being played for the first time in the tournament being held in Doha from Dec. 10-24. The region’s sports fans, whose passions are legend when it comes to supporting their own national team, eagerly await the competition.

“QSi has set new standards of excellence in sports marketing with our innovatively packaged event partnerships for the Gulf Cup, the like of which have not featured previously in this exciting and passionate regional event,” Khalifa Al Subaey, vice chairman, QSi, said

Q-Tel is a major company in the region. “Winning its confidence is a major achievement for QSi, vindicating our professional approach to the task we were given by Higher Authorities back in April.

I’m proud to have Q-Tel’s support for this major tournament being held in Qatar once again for the benefit of the regions’ sporting peoples,” Q-tel CEO Dr. Nasser Marafih said.

“The 17th Arabian Gulf Cup is one of the most eagerly anticipated sporting events in the region and we’re happy to support QSi in bringing this event to the people of Qatar.

“We remain firmly committed to our role in the development of Qatar’s society and support of various educational, medical, sporting, cultural and charitable events and organizations to serve the local community,” Dr. Marafih said.

“Qatar is increasingly becoming a sporting hub for major international and regional events and Q-Tel has been actively involved in sponsoring such events through both technological and financial support,” Dr. Marafih added.
