JEDDAH, 9 November 2004 — The Makkah Municipality has fined more than 500 shops in the city for selling cigarettes to pilgrims and visitors violating regulations, Al-Madinah reported yesterday quoting Jamal Hariri, deputy mayor for services. He said the fines imposed on shops ranged from SR200 to SR500. He said the municipality’s squads are making rounds in the city to check violators. Volunteers of community centers in Makkah are working six hours daily to educate the public on the harmful effects of smoking, the paper said.
