News agencies have reported that since the re-election of President George W. Bush, Canada’s immigration website — canada.gc.ca — has been flooded with a record number of hits from US residents looking for an option coping with four more years of Republican politics. Numerous immigration lawyers have also been contacted concerning immigration to Canada.

It seems that marriage is often the quickest way for Americans to gain entry to another country and help is being offered on that front at www.marryanamerican.ca, a satirical site set up by Canadian-based This Magazine. Originally the site was created as a means for Canadians to offer to “rescue a progressive American from four more years of George W. Bush.” The site encourages Canadian singles, tired of the dating scene, to offer marriage to save an American liberal for love or just plain pity.

MarryAnAmerican.ca points out that “Americans, sick of the political climate of their homeland, have long sought refuge within Canadian borders.” Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin said he’d welcome aspiring US immigrants but joked that they couldn’t say they’re refugees or expect preferential treatment.

At first only Canadians registered at MarryAnAmerican.ca to propose marriage to desperate Americans, but now singles from all over the world are signing up to save US citizens opposed to George W. Offers for marriage posted at the site have come from all over Europe, Australia, Thailand, Mexico, India, Nigeria and the Philippines. Sadly, there aren’t very many volunteers from the Middle East. Only a few are registered from Jordan and the UAE. It seems a pity that we in the Arab world aren’t offering even moral support to American liberals in need, so click to www.marryanamerican.ca and do your part.
