MADINAH, 18 November 2004 — A Bangladeshi worker has been awarded SR800,000 in compensation by a court for serious injuries he suffered in a road accident.
The Shariah Court in Qasim recently ordered a Saudi driver who caused the accident and the contracting company which employed the Bangladeshi to pay the amount. As per the judgment, the company will bear 75 percent of the amount while the driver will pay 25 percent.
The expatriate worker was overrun by the 70-year-old Saudi while the former was carrying out maintenance work on Badaie-Mudnib Road.
The Saudi claimed that the company did not put up any signboard indicating maintenance was under way. “The road was not closed for traffic either,” he said, adding that soil heaped on the road had prevented his view.
The Bangladeshi sustained serious injuries to his head, lungs and spine as a result of the accident and is bed-ridden.
The driver said he would file a complaint against the company because it did not close the road for traffic while carrying out maintenance work.
