JEDDAH, 19 November 2004 — Six members of a Saudi family were killed and four others injured when their car fell into a deep well along a rural road in the Asir region, Al-Jazirah Arabic daily reported yesterday.
“The family members got together for Eid and decided to spend the remaining days of the holiday picnicking in an open area,” the paper said.
The head of the family, who was driving the car, did not notice the well which was almost in the middle of the road and had no barriers. “To make matters worse, water in the well was four meters deep, which made their escape impossible,” the paper said. The man, his wife and four children drowned.
People residing nearby urged the owner of the well to construct a wall around it to avoid such accidents in future.
