JEDDAH, 8 May 2005 — Efforts are under way to build 120 housing units for the victims of flash floods in the Shaaba district of Khalees, according to Princess Sara bint Abdul Mohsen Al-Anqari, the wife of Makkah Governor Prince Abdul Majeed.
Princess Sara, chairwoman of the Higher Women’s Committee for Humanitarian and Social Services, said she has instructed authorities to complete the project quickly.
“The committee’s move to establish housing facilities for the poor and needy in the Makkah region comes in support of Crown Prince Abdullah’s call to fight poverty and construct housing units for the poor,” the princess said in a statement.
She said there are a number of villages and townships in the region that require charitable housing units as hundreds of people live in these areas without proper housing.
“We will support every effort to fight poverty,” the princess said. She referred to the committee’s efforts to transform the desert village of Tufail to a model village with 300 housing units and educational, health and social facilities.
Earlier, a team of engineers visited Khuwar, which was one of the worst hit villages in recent flash floods, to give an assessment of damages. The flood had destroyed 100 houses in the area. The team will meet with municipal officials to identify the areas where new housing units could be constructed.
