FLORIDA, 10 May 2005 — Clint Barmes slammed a three-run inside the park homer and Aaron Miles cracked a grand slam as the Colorado Rockies powered past the Florida Marlins 8-3 to snap a 10-game losing streak in National League play in Miami on Sunday.
Jeff Francis (2-1) provided Colorado with 6 2/3 strong innings, giving up two runs on seven hits, striking out seven and walking two as the Rockies, who won on the road for just the second time this season. Florida starter Al Leiter (1-3) lasted just four inning, surrendering all eight Colorado runs.
After spotting Florida an early 1-0 lead, Colorado answered with four runs in the second, three of those coming when Barmes drove the ball to the right field wall past Juan Encarnacion for a rare inside the park homer.
In Atlanta, Mike Hampton pitched a complete game two-hit shutout and helped his own cause with a solo homer as the Braves thumped the slumping Houston Astros 16-0. Hampton (4-1) was dominant in allowing just three Astros to reach base, giving up a leadoff single to Mike Lamb in the top of the second and retiring the next 20 batters.
In Chicago, Carlos Zambrano pitched a complete game five-hitter while Neifi Perez and Aramis Ramirez each had home runs as the Cubs snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.
In Milwaukee, J.J. Hardy lined the game winning pinch-hit RBI single with two out in the ninth inning, lifting the Brewers past the New York Mets 5-4. Geoff Jenkins, Jeff Cirillo, Junior Spivey, who scored the winning run, each had three hits for the Brewers.
In Phoenix, Matt Lawton crushed grand slam and RBI double and Ty Wigginton and Daryle Ward also homered guiding the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 16-2 rout of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Leading 4-2 the Pirates made sure of decision scoring five in the eighth and seven more in the ninth to collect their fifth win in six games.
In Cincinnati, Jason Phillips smashed his first career grand slam and Milton Bradley added a solo shot to lift the Dodgers to a 9-3 win over the Reds. Phillips had a career afternoon at the plate for the Dodgers going four-for-five and driving in five runs and scoring three.
In St. Louis, a three-run double from Scott Rolen keyed an 11-run first inning as the Cardinals bolted to a commanding early lead then eased to a 15-5 win over the San Diego Padres, halting a three-game losing streak.
In San Francisco, Omar Vizquel doubled home the game winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning, lifting the Giants to a 4-3 win over the Washington Nationals.
