NEW YORK, 10 May 2005 — Kevin Brown pitched seven shutout innings to notch his first win of the season as the New York Yankees recorded their second straight shutout with a 6-0 home victory over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday.

The positive result snapped a career-high seven-game losing streak for Brown (1-4) and gave Joe Torre his 900th career win as Yankee manager. Brown’s gem followed a sparkling performance by Mike Mussina in a 5-0 shutout on Saturday, giving the struggling Yankees just their third series win of the season.

Brown, who had not tasted victory since Game Three of the AL Division series against Minnesota last October, scattered five hits while striking out four and issuing one walk. Tom Gordon pitched a perfect ninth and Tanyon Sturtze worked a scoreless ninth to preserve the shutout.

In Boston, Richie Sexson crushed a seventh inning grand slam to earn the Seattle Mariners a 6-4 win over the Red Sox and a split of their Sunday doubleheader at Fenway Park. Boston starter Wade Miller pitched five innings in his Red Sox debut, giving up two runs on three hits and striking out six but did not figure in the decision.

In the opener, Kevin Millar had a three-run double and Jeremi Gonzalez pitched 5 2/3 strong innings to earn his first win since August 2003 as the Red Sox won 6-3. Called up as a replacement for injured aces Curt Schilling and David Wells, Gonzalez allowed three runs — two earned — on four hits.

In Anaheim, Mike Maroth tossed a three-hitter over eight innings and Ivan Rodriguez had a three-run triple to key a seven-run third inning as the Detroit Tigers roared to an early lead then cruised to a 10-1 demolition of the Los Angeles Angels. In the third inning, the Tigers sent 13 men to the plate. Detroit loaded the bases for Rodriguez who promptly cleared them with a sharp triple to left.

In Cleveland, Kenny Rogers tossed seven shutout innings as Michael Young and Richard Hidalgo both homered to help the Texas Rangers to a 7-2 win over the Indians. Rogers (3-2), once again sparkled on the hill for the Rangers, scattering six hits over seven inning extending his shutout streak to 21 innings.

In St. Petersburg, Matthew LeCroy had a three-run homer and Justin Morneau went four-for-four with three RBIs powering the Minnesota Twins to a 9-6 decision over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Joe Mauer also had a solo homer for the Twins, who have now won nine of their last 12.

In Baltimore, Angel Berroa smacked a three-run homer and Mike Sweeney and Matt Stairs added solo shots as the Kansas City Royals won for just the third time in 17 games, holding on to edge the Orioles 10-8.

In Toronto, Jermaine Dye and Juan Uribe both crushed homeruns as the Chicago White Sox notched their eighth straight win with a 5-4 victory over the Blue Jays. Mark Buehrle (5-1) allowed four runs — two earned — on nine hits and struck out four in 7 1/3 innings of work to collect his forth straight win as the White Sox improved to a major league best 24-7.
