RIYADH, 10 May 2005 — Two suspected terrorists were injured when police opened fire late last night on a car east of the capital. The two suspects have been admitted to hospital, while a third member of the group managed to escape.
A security source told Arab News that an all points alert for a car had been issued earlier in the day by the police and police patrols were on the lookout for this vehicle put on the surveillance list for security reasons.
On spotting the car in Abdullah ibn Abbas Street in Al-Rawabi District, a police patrol approached it and the three suspects in the vehicle opened fire.
Police officers retaliated and a gunbattle took place. According to the source, two of the three suspects were injured. Unconfirmed reports say the third suspect managed to flee in a car which he hijacked at gunpoint.
Police have impounded the suspects’ car. Several hand grenades and pistols were found in the car. The source said police were trying to establish whether the suspects intended to carry out a terrorist act.
No member of the security forces was injured.
