CINCINNATTI, 13 May 2005 — Ryan Klesko smacked a three-run homer and Tim Stauffer earned a win on his major league debut as the San Diego Padres dumped the Cincinnati Reds 7-2 in National League play on Wednesday.

Mark Loretta went five-for-six with an RBI and a pair of runs scored while Dave Roberts was four-for-five, scoring three times to help the streaking Padres to their eighth win in 10 games and manager Bruce Bochy his 800th career victory.

Stauffer (1-0), called up from the minors for injured Tim Redding, turned in a gritty effort allowing two runs on four hits, striking out five and walking three in six innings of work.

Trailing 2-1 entering the fourth, Klesko put the Padres ahead for good when he homered to deep right and brought home Dave Roberts and Mark Loretta.

In Milwaukee, Bill Hall cracked an eighth inning homer and Junior Spivey doubled in the winning run as the Brewers rallied to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2.

Trailing 2-1 entering the eighth, Hall homered off Ryan Madson to deep left to tie the game then Spivey lined a three-run double over left-fielder Pat Burrell to score Jeff Cirillo, Brady Clark and Chris Magruder and make a winner out of Doug Davis.

In Chicago, Derrek Lee smacked a 10th inning home run to lead the Cubs to a 4-3 decision over the New York Mets.

After fouling off five times, Lee finally got the pitch he wanted from Heath Bell (0-1) and connected for his 10th homer of the season, giving the Cubs their third victory in four games.

In Denver, Dustan Mohr had a solo home run and Todd Greene smacked a game-winning bases loaded single in the ninth to give the Colorado Rockies a 6-5 win over the Atlanta Braves.

In Miami, Damion Easley smacked a two-run homer and Dontrelle Willis pitched eight innings of one-run baseball to lead the Florida Marlins past the Houston Astros 2-1. With the victory, Willis (7-0) became the first pitcher to reach seven wins this season and leads the major leagues with a sparkling 1.08 era.

In Phoenix, Chad Tracy slapped a go ahead single and Javier Vazquez provided seven solid innings as the Arizona Diamondback rallied to edge the Washington Nationals 3-2. Tied 2-2 going into the eighth, Tracy singled to right field, scoring Troy Glaus who had reached base with a one-out single.

In San Francisco, Ty Wigginton and Daryle Ward cracked two-run homers and rookie Ray Sadler added a solo shot to power the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 7-2 triumph over the Giants. Sadler’s third inning homer was his first career major league hit, giving the Pirates the early 1-0 lead.

In St. Louis, Larry Walker had three hits and three RBIs as the Cardinals pounded Dodgers pitchers for 19 hits on their way to a 9-3 win. David Eckstein went four-for-five with an RBI and a run scored, while Cesar Izturis also had three hits and scored twice for the Dodgers.

Yankees Sink Mariners

for Fifth Straight Win

In New York, Derek Jeter, Gary Sheffield, Jorge Posada and Tino Martinez all homered as the streaking New York Yankees won a 13-9 slugfest against the Seattle Mariners stretching their unbeaten run to five games on Wednesday.

Martinez’s fourth inning three-run blast extended his home run streak to five games, the longest since 1987 when Don Mattingly, now Yankees batting coach, homered in eight straight contests.

The Mariners also had four home runs, Richie Sexson and Raul Ibanez belting three-run blasts while Bret Boone had a two-run shot and Ichiro Suzuki a solo hit.

The Yankees broke open a 9-9 deadlock in the fifth when Jeter led off the inning with a line drive homer over the Yankee Stadium wall in deep right field.

In Boston, Jason Varitek belted a one-out ninth inning two-run homer, lifting the Red Sox to 6-5 victory over the Oakland Athletics for their seventh win in eight games. Varitek capped off a three-for-four day at the plate when he homered to right field off Octavio Dotel (1-3), earning the Red Sox a walk off win for the second consecutive day.

In Toronto, Alex Rios’ two-run double keyed a five-run eighth inning as the Blue Jays rallied past the Kansas City Royals 12-9, spoiling new manager Bob Schaefer’s debut. Taking over for Tony Pena, who resigned 24 hours earlier following a 3-1 loss to Toronto, Schaefer did not get off to a dream start as the Royals slumped to a major league worst 8-26 despite pounding out a season-high 16 hits.

In Baltimore, Sidney Ponson pitched eight strong innings and B.J. Surhoff singled home the tie-breaking run in the eighth inning as the Orioles dumped the Minnesota Twins 7-4.

In St. Petersburg, Orlando Hernandez delivered 6 1/3 solid innings and Paul Konerko had the big hit in a four-run fifth inning as the Chicago White Sox scored a 5-2 win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Hernandez (5-1) yielded two runs on just three hits, struck out four and walked four to collect his third straight win.

In Arlington, Marcus Thames cracked a two-run homer and Brandon Inge scored the winning run with a ninth inning sacrifice fly as the Detroit Tigers slipped past the Rangers 6-5 to register for their fourth win in five games. Jamie Walker (2-0) retired two batters in relief for the win and Ugueth Urbina recorded his third save of the season despite giving up a pinch-hit homer to David Dellucci in the bottom of the ninth.

In Anaheim, Ben Broussard, Jhonny Peralta and Casey Blake each hit home runs as the Cleveland Indians crushed the Los Angeles Angels 9-3. Broussard, who homered to center field in the second inning to tie the score at 1-1, finished with three hits and fell just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
