DAMMAM, 22 May 2005 — The Saudi Cancer Foundation has seen a surge in new volunteers over the last few weeks. The majority of them are highly educated and keen to spread awareness about cancer among both patients and ordinary people.
“We are trying to create a database on our researchers’ studies and findings related to this disease and pass it through to our society,” a spokesman told Arab News recently.
The team of volunteers aims to disseminate their accumulated findings in an accessible form — pictures, experiment results or complete studies — to further the research into the cause and early detection of cancer and to try and find a way of increasing the body’s immunity to it.
The foundation’s board members thanked businessmen for their continuous financial, moral and human support that helped a lot in realizing this project.
The Medical Education Program, with both short-term and long-term plans, need funds to ensure actual fulfillment, it said.
“We are delighted with the increase in the number of volunteers that are being registered every week and expect it to keep rising,” said Fatima A. Al-Qahtani, the foundation’s media manager.
The foundation which was started by 10 people currently has more than 560 active members.
