CHICAGO, 23 May 2005 — Lamon Brewster defeated Poland’s Andrew Golota by technical knockout after just 53 seconds to retain his World Boxing Organization heavyweight title on Saturday night.
Referee Gino Rodriguez stopped the fight after Brewster had floored Golota twice with left hooks in a lopsided bout which didn’t even last one round.
Brewster, 31, got his 32nd victory in 34 professional bouts while Golota, now at 38 wins, six defeats and one draw, lost a title fight for the fourth time in his career.
Brewster has been in possession of the WBO title since knocking out Wladimir Klitchko last year. His next opponent his decided on Saturday in Stuttgart, Germany, when European champion Luan Krasniqi of Germany fights American Lance Whitaker.
In an undercard fight, Poland’s Tomasz Adamek remained unbeaten and captured the vacant World Boxing Council light heavyweight title here Saturday with a 12-round majority decision over Australian Paul Briggs.
Adamek rallied in the closing rounds of a scintillating seesaw battle and was awarded the victory by two judges by scores of 115-113 and 117-113. The third judge scored it a draw at 114-114.
Adamek was fighting in the United States for the first time, and fought past the 10th round for the first time — looking stronger as the fight went on. A clash of heads in the second left Briggs with a bloody cut above his left eye that continued to affect him for the rest of the fight. By the third round Ademak was fighting with a badly swollen eye.
But they continued to exchange punishing blows, even when Ademak had Briggs on the ropes in the 12th.
